The best movies on Amazon Prime Video this month are laugh-out-loud comedies, but each falls under a different sub-genre. There’s a fantastical coming-of-age story, an action mystery, a mockumentary and a horror film. All four of them are underrated gems that manage to bring something new to their respective genre, thanks to performances from stellar […]

Loosely based on a true story, Brittany Runs a Marathon is a sweet and intelligent comedy that’s anchored by Bell’s stellar performance. It takes a hard look at the way that society demonizes overweight people and the quagmires of self-love and self-care. It has a great supporting cast, which also includes Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect) and Lil Rel Howery (Get Out).

Netflix (2) Sometimes the best way to celebrate Valentine’s Day is to stay in for a little Netflix and chill. Loretta Sage (Bullock), an archaeologist-turned-novelist who is grieving the recent death of her husband, uses real history as the inspiration for her lusty romance novels. Unfortunately for Loretta, a psychotic billionaire (a hilariously evil Radcliffe) becomes convinced that her expertise is key to finding the Crown of Fire, so he kidnaps her. The Fabio-esque cover model for Loretta’s books, Alan (Tatum), takes it upon himself to rescue her.

But despite his rippling muscles, Alan is a far cry from Indiana Jones. (In one hilarious scene, Loretta has to pick leeches off of a horrified Alan.) As Loretta and Alan bumble through the jungle together, they each take turns being the damsel in distress, but through saving one another, they end up regaining confidence in themselves.

‘Fire Island’ (2022)

The Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen film version of Pride and Prejudice just celebrated its 20th anniversary, drawing thousands to special screenings. If you were part of that audience and are eager for more Darcy/Elizabeth-inspired action, check out this modern-day retelling of the Austen classic.

In Fire Island, a group of long-time friends (all gay men) head to the titular vacation spot for a week of partying. Noah (Joel Kim Booster, who also wrote the film) is determined to help his shy best friend, Howie (Bowen Yang, Saturday Night Live), find love — or at least a hook-up — during the trip. But when Howie hits it off with the adorable doctor Charlie (James Scully) at a party, Charlie’s friend Will (Conrad Ricamora) seems determined to keep them apart.

While most people are storming the multiplex to watch the latest Marvel movie, Thunderbolts*, or watch Sinners a second or third time, some moviegoers are staying inside for various reasons or maybe no reason at all. After all, why venture outside when there are hundreds of quality movies at your fingertips? That’s certainly the case […]

Like any good Pride and Prejudice adaptation, Fire Island is a story about how first impressions can be entirely incorrect. Booster and Ricamora have adorably awkward chemistry together as their mutual hatred turns to mutual affection. Margaret Cho is delightful in the interfering “Mrs. Bennett” role, and a scene in which Matt Rogers (Yang’s Las Culturistas co-host) and Tomás Matos act out a scene from My Cousin Vinny is comedy gold.
